The conversion of Frances Union of Muslim Organizations: from a Muslim politics in France to the organization of French Islam
The
Union of French Muslim Organizations (L'Union des Organisations Islamiques de
France, or UOIF) is one of the three main Muslim federations in charge of the
"institutionalization" - the construction of an official system of
regulation and representation - of Islam in France. Nevertheless, the fact that
some of the Unions founding members started out as activists for a political
brand of Islam has led numerous observers to reduce this organization to a simple
"Trojan horse" of Islamism in France.
However seductive this explanation may seem to certain analysts, it ignores
the differences between the spheres of politics and religion. In doing so it
overlooks the process of conversion that has allowed UOIF militants to carve
out their place as credible spokespeople in the field of the institutionalization
of Islam.
My presentation will therefore reexamine the trajectories and social dispositions
of the UOIFs founders. I will show how these militants progressively converted
what began as political militancy in the name of Islam into a more strictly
religious engagement. On the one hand, their dispositions and political representations
definitively influenced the place the Union carved out for itself in the field
of institutionalized Islam in France. On the other hand, however, these same
members underwent a profound adaptation in order to insert themselves in a social
space that functioned according to different logics than the political arena
they had come from. In this sense my study will examine the various motors and
obstacles to the conversion of the UOIF, including the Unions founding
members, the other actors of the institutionalization of the Muslim faith in
France (the French state, other national Muslim federations, worshipers and
supporters, etc.), and finally the broader context in which the institutionalization
of Islam took place.

Social conditions of the politicization of religious involvements in France during the 1960s. A study of the life-paths of five veterans of May 1968.
This
paper tackles the issue of the deciding social factors behind the politicization
of religious involvement during the 1960s by examining the life-paths of former
participants in the events of May 1968.
A first set of life paths follows a road towards politicization characterized
by an early involvement with catholic youth organisations, which later converts
into a political involvement during the 1960s, more often than not via the Third
World support movement. The analysis of the life trajectories of Christiane
and Jean, a couple from a catholic, working class background, both of whom would
become Trotskyite militants, and that of Colette, born into an upper class,
catholic bourgeois family who became a Maoist militant, allows us to identify
the turning points where the religious sphere shifts to a political one. We
will open the black box of conversion to discuss the nature of the
aptitudes and experience acquired in the context of religious socialization
and how they could be redeployed and applied in the political context.
The second collective profile of trajectories analyzed concerns the participants
sharing a sense of belonging to a persecuted minority (principally
Jewish or protestant), which one finds in extreme-leftist political movements
at the end of the 1960s. We will show how this feeling can generate a predisposition
towards radical militancy by analyzing the life paths of Simon and Jacques,
two future Maoists of Jewish and protestant origin, respectively.
In order to understand the different temporalities of these political and/or
political, religious involvements three levels of analysis will be considered:
First, that of the biographical trajectories, then that of the collective trajectories
of organisations into which these participants became involved, and, finally,
that of the existing political/religious context in an attempt to specify the
turning points of their careers at the interface between the religious and political
spheres.

Peut-on dire
militants (autres partis politiques, associations culturelles
) ?
Benny
Levys political itinerary, from leftist activism in the 70s to Orthodox
Judaism, has evolved into a nearby topos in French Jewish imaginary.
Drawing on several biographies of ex-leftist activists met in non-Orthodox synagogues,
this paper will try and contextualize apparently atypical itineraries.
Can these biographies be interpreted as simply reconverting dispositions
for commitment from one place to another? The relative invisibility of their
political past within synagogues contrasts with perceptions from the outside
that mark them as unlikely and atypical. However, ethnographical research reveals
how past political experiences impact on present religious commitment (with
variations across gender and occupational lines).
Why come to synagogues rather than to other, non-religious, spaces (such as
political parties or Jewish cultural organizations)? Understanding as closely
as possible how Jewish spaces of socializing have reconfigured in the last 50
years also involves reassessing analytical separations between ethnic/religious
identity and (left) politics that do not fit Jewish experience. The collapse
of far-left organizations may help explaining how religious communities can
be a way of maintaining pre-existing (though often invisible as such in political
contexts) Jewish connections, a stake all the more vital in families shattered
by Shoah.
